Born in Jerez de la Frontera, he began his studies at the age of 8 and, there, also began his professional career. He was successful as a soloist in the Ballet Albarizuela and received the awards as the best dancer in the National Ubrique Competition in 1989 and the Provincial Cádiz Competition in 1990.

He has danced with a number of companies including those of Carmen Cortés, and Manuel Soler, and as a soloist for the companies of Antonio Vargas, el Güito, and Luisillo. He has also colaborated with artists like Gerardo Núñez and Antonio Canales.

In 1992, he decided to begin an independant career, performing in several tablaos and with an occasional appearance on television. In 1995, he formed his own company which toured all over Europe and other countries including Italy, Japan, Venezuela, Israel, and Senegal.

In 1999, Ortega was presented by Cristina Hoyos in the Central Theatre in Seville as one of the most distinct flamenco dancers of today. He performed as a guest artist in 2002 in the work “Medea” and in 2003 in the show “Carmen” in Canada as Don José.

He has had great success with his company, being praised by critics, not only as a dancer, but also as a choreographer. In 2005, he presented with his company his show “Orpheus”, based on the greek tragedy. He participated in the 10th Festival of Jerez with his company with great success and receiving much praise from critics and the public.

He has combined his work on the stage with that of teaching, giving courses in Canada, Japan and the United States. In 2004, Cristina Hoyos asked him to teach classes to the Company Flamenco Andaluce.
